ABOUT:
THERE'S SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS TOWN...

Catrina and her family are moving to the coast of Northern California because her little sister, Maya, is sick. Cat isn't happy about leaving her friends for Bahía de la Luna, but Maya has cystic fibrosis and will benefit from the cool, salty air that blows in from the sea. As the girls explore their new home, a neighbor lets them in on a secret: There are ghosts in Bahía de la Luna. Maya is determined to meet one, but Cat wants nothing to do with them. As the time of year when ghosts reunite with their loved ones approaches, Cat must figure out how to put aside her fears for her sister's sake -- and her own.

Raina Telgemeier has masterfully created a moving and insightful story about the power of family and friendship, and how it gives us the courage to do what we never thought possible. (GoodReads)

REVIEW:
I loved this graphic novel. I picked it up only because it was on a book challenge I’m a part of, but I’m so glad I did.

It is a great story to teach young teens a little about cystic fibrosis and Dia de Los Muertos. It’s definitely fantasy since the ghosts come back to the town to celebrate with the living and our main character flies with them, but that doesn’t take away from the story at all. It gives it a sense of adventure mixed in with the family storyline.

This book has so much heart! I think it would be a great family read with younger children and an overall great read for everyone else.

A Royal Read

REVIEW:
I had this book sitting on my shelf for a while and decided to pick up the audiobook at work to listen to in the car. It was an excellent choice!

The readers of the book ( Megan Tusing, Sarah Mollo-Christensen) were fantastic, which almost never happens in my experience. The book is told in alternating voices from the two sisters. Each narrator voiced a sister. Though they sounded similar it was always pretty easy to tell which sisters’ chapter it was.  The narrators really brought the sisters to life and put a lot of emotion into the reading. 5 Stars for narration!!! It helps that they had an excellent story though too.

The story, though on the short side, was full of girl power and survival. It takes place in a world where females have no choices or power. They’re told what to do and that’s it. I’ve read that kind of story before, but this story takes it to a new level with it’s story telling. I didn’t think I was going to like both sisters, one was kind of stuck up in the beginning, but by the end I couldn’t get enough of them. I was rooting for them and hoping that they’d both survive. I loved the alternating points of view. You really got to learn more about the characters that way and really start to feel for them. There is so much family loyalty and betrayal it just made the book even more exciting. It does end in kind of a cliff hanger though. Definitely a 5 Star go out and read this book right now type read! I can’t wait for book 2 (Queen of Ruin) coming out in July 2019!

This book would be a great read for anyone looking for a fantasy with strong female characters. It was mostly clean so even most of the younger teens can enjoy it.

Until Friday Night (The Field Party #1)
by Abbi Glines
Hardcover, 336 pages
Published August 25th 2015 by Simon Pulse
ISBN: 9781481438858

ABOUT:
To everyone who knows him, West Ashby has always been that guy: the cocky, popular, way-too-handsome-for-his-own-good football god who led Lawton High to the state championships. But while West may be Big Man on Campus on the outside, on the inside he’s battling the grief that comes with watching his father slowly die of cancer.

Two years ago, Maggie Carleton’s life fell apart when her father murdered her mother. And after she told the police what happened, she stopped speaking and hasn’t spoken since. Even the move to Lawton, Alabama, couldn’t draw Maggie back out. So she stayed quiet, keeping her sorrow and her fractured heart hidden away.

As West’s pain becomes too much to handle, he knows he needs to talk to someone about his father—so in the dark shadows of a post-game party, he opens up to the one girl who he knows won’t tell anyone else.

West expected that talking about his dad would bring some relief, or at least a flood of emotions he couldn’t control. But he never expected the quiet new girl to reply, to reveal a pain even deeper than his own—or for them to form a connection so strong that he couldn’t ever let her go…  (Goodreads)

REVIEW:
First thing, this is so not a “clean” teen read. These kids are drinking and having sex right and left. It’s the one big thing that annoyed me. Maybe I’m wrong or live in the wrong part of the country, but I really don’t remember kids in High School doing that constantly. There were parties sure, and I know drinking and sex took place, but it just seemed so over done in this book. Maybe I’m just old and things have changed.

Anyway, the book is actually about West who is a jock with a major secret. His Father is dying. Then there’s Maggie who’s new to town and doesn’t talk due to what she saw happen. Of course when you have a secret, the person you can rely on to not tell it is the girl who doesn’t talk, so wa la a romance is formed. The two form a bond and while Maggie helps West with his Father’s death, West helps Maggie find her voice. Aw ! How sweet!  And yes with all the Father/Son moments in this book I did cry a bit. If you don’t you have no soul! (Just kidding about the no soul, but it is really sad and touching in parts.)

This book is a really quick read with a ton of characters who end up having continuation books of their own. Because it switches back and forth from West’s point of view to Maggie’s you really get to learn more about the characters and form deeper bonds with them. I think if it was all in Maggie’s point of view I would have hated West and thought he was a complete jerk. But because I got to see what he was going through with his dad through his eyes, feelings, and thoughts it made me understand him so much better.

Overall, if you’d like to cry pick up this book. If you want a decent misunderstood teen romance story also pick up this book. Be warned though that it’s not for young teens. Even High Schoolers might not be ready for everything yet.

Five Feet Apart
by Rachael Lippincott
Hardcover, 288 pages
Published November 20th 2018 by Simon Schuster Books for Young Readers
ISBN: 9781534437333
Library

ABOUT:
Can you love someone you can never touch?

Stella Grant likes to be in control—even though her totally out of control lungs have sent her in and out of the hospital most of her life. At this point, what Stella needs to control most is keeping herself away from anyone or anything that might pass along an infection and jeopardize the possibility of a lung transplant. Six feet apart. No exceptions.

The only thing Will Newman wants to be in control of is getting out of this hospital. He couldn’t care less about his treatments, or a fancy new clinical drug trial. Soon, he’ll turn eighteen and then he’ll be able to unplug all these machines and actually go see the world, not just its hospitals.

Will’s exactly what Stella needs to stay away from. If he so much as breathes on Stella she could lose her spot on the transplant list. Either one of them could die. The only way to stay alive is to stay apart. But suddenly six feet doesn’t feel like safety. It feels like punishment.

What if they could steal back just a little bit of the space their broken lungs have stolen from them? Would five feet apart really be so dangerous if it stops their hearts from breaking too? (Goodreads)

RATING: 4 Stars

REVIEW:
This book is marketed as being just like “A Fault In Our Stars”. If you’re only looking at a romance between two sick kids then yes, it’s exactly like that. In reality though it has a lot of differences.

The two main characters of this story share the same disease, Cystic Fibrosis.  They aren’t supposed to get within six feet of each other, so of course that means they can never ever touch. But when you’re a teenager and a cute boy is staying right next door, of course crushes occur. And crushes can lead to romance. To take back a little bit of what their diseases have stolen from them, the main characters decided to live by the new five feet apart rule.

Possible spoiler….
Of course at one point they end up touching in order to save one of their lives. They both live to see the end of the book but you know they both aren’t going to live long (especially one of them). They also aren’t together at the end of the book. How can you really have a romance if you can’t touch or get to close? Our two teens do learn a lot from each other and in the end come away with new views on life because of it.

I enjoyed this book mostly because I learned things about a disease that I wasn’t really familiar with. It made me see things through someone else’s eyes and made me look at my life a bit differently. It wasn’t the best written books, I think mostly because it’s taken from a screen play to a movie, but it did keep me interested up until the end. Because I have seen the trailer for the movie I kept picturing Cole Sprouse as Will. I feel like that might have made things a bit more entertaining for me as well.

For the most part I think any teen could read this book and enjoy it. There is mention of two side characters having sex but it is such a tiny piece in an otherwise pretty clean book.

REVIEW:
This book is really hard to review without giving anything away. From the description it sounds like a straight up teen romance love triangle. I promise you though this book is so much more than that. It’s main focus is on serious issues that teens and adults go through.

(Possible Spoilers In This Paragraph)
This books really deals with mental illness and PTSD. There is an abortion, death, dealing with loss, a serious accident, attempted suicide and more. It is deep and meaningful. The characters in this book have so much to overcome and deal with. The twist ending made me look at this book in a whole new way.  (Very Spoilery….. This book turns into a It’s A Wonderful Life type story at the end…. Which actually made it even more special.)

Overall, I really liked this book. I’m so happy that it was more than just a love story. It made me look at a few things in a different way, which I always appreciate. It does deal with a lot of serious issues that younger teens might not be ready for. Those who are ready I think will enjoy this hidden gem.

REVIEW:
Karen M. McManus does it again!
Plot Twists Galore!
The atmosphere was mysterious and perfect. It kind of reminded me of the old R.L. Stine Fear Street books. (Come on. A horror themed theme park named Murderland/Fright Farm as part of the setting? Who doesn’t expect bad things to happen there?) Our characters were likable, yet at the same time I was suspicious of everyone. This book had me guessing until the end.

I wouldn’t consider this book “clean”. Teens are drinking at a party and there’s other things that I don’t want to mention because it could hurt the mystery. Mature teens looking for a good mystery/thriller will love this book though. Why not pick up McManus’s other book “One Of Us Is Lying” while you’re waiting to get your hands on this one.

Archenemies (Renegades #2)
by Marissa Meyer
Hardcover, 471 pages
Published November 6th 2018 by Feiwel Friends
ISBN: 9781250078308
Library

ABOUT:
Time is running out. Together, they can save the world. But are they each other's worst nightmare?

Nova's double life is about to get a lot more complicated:

As Insomnia, she is a full-fledged member of the Renegades, a syndicate of powerful and beloved superheroes. She works with Adrian's patrol unit to protect the weak and maintain order in Gatlon City.

As Nightmare, she is an Anarchist—a group of villains who are determined to destroy the Renegades. Nova wants vengeance against the so-called heroes who once failed her when she needed them the most.

But as Nova, her feelings for Adrian are deepening, despite the fact that he is the son of her sworn enemies and, unbeknownst to Nova, he has some dangerous secrets of his own.

In this second installment of the Renegades trilogy, Nova, Adrian, and the rest of their crew—Ruby, Oscar, and Danna—are faced with escalating crime in Gatlon City, while covert weapons and conflicting missions have Nova and Adrian questioning not only their beliefs about justice but also the feelings they have for each other.

The line between good and evil has been blurred, but what's clear to them both is that too much power could mean the end of their City—and the world—as they know it. (Goodreads)

RATING: 4 Stars

REVIEW:
I loved the first book (“Renegades”) of this series. It reminded me so much of old school comics. The villains were awesome. The good guys made me question whether or not they were really good. There was plenty of action. It was great!

Fast forward to me being super excited for book two (“Archenemies”) and then being a bit let down by it. Don’t get me wrong, the book is not bad. I still enjoyed it a lot. Book two is just missing something that made book one special. It was slower and took more time to get to the point. There were a lot of details that I feel could have been condensed. The characters seemed to spend more time talking and thinking than they did fighting to save the world. The new formula that can take away powers is nothing new to the superhero genre and just seemed to be missing something to make it interesting, at least to me.

Our favorite characters are all back, only this time I feel like the book spent way too much time on the “Good” guys. We barely saw our favorite super-villains. We got to learn a bit more about Adrian’s powers and home life. And we got to see how those labeled as “Good Guys” are in fact not so good.

Yes this book left us with yet another cliffhanger. Yes if you read this one you’ll most definitely have to read book three as well when it comes out. Yes this book is still a good read for those of us who enjoy a good superhero novel. Yes it’s not as good as book one, but it’s still enjoyable.

Overall, I’d say read this book. Teens of any age who are into superheroes will probably love this series.

RATING: 5 Stars

REVIEW:
This book is classic Katie McGarry formula. Why mess with a great thing?
Misunderstood teens finding each other and making each other better people in the long run. Teen and family drama, this time mixed with a little mini touch of supernatural made for an entertaining read. (Note the supernatural part of it isn’t a big deal. There are no ghosts, vampires, etc. It’s most psychic readings and fortunetelling.) The characters in this book were all likeable and just like in her other books I really just wanted to hug the kids and tell them everything would be ok.

(Possible Spoilers/Hints. Read At Own Risk)
Since this is a “formula” book, we know it will end up all working out, though the teens are not going to have a super easy road ahead of them (a common jumping off point the author uses to bring us back for the next book). And there are parts of the story (especially towards the end) where it really looked like we were not going to have a typical Kaite ending. It made it a very tense couple chapters for me. According to what I’ve read online this is just the first book in the series. It’s supposed to turn into a series like “Pushing The Limits”, which excites me so much! I can’t wait to see who the next book might be about…. Though I have some ideas. And in case Katie McGarry reads this …. I really want to know more about Jesse’s friends! What is that girl suffering with!

Overall, I really liked this book. It’s one that I could see picking up for a second read. There are some issues that could be triggers in people (abuse, drinking, sickness….) so it’s not a book for everyone. I think that older teens looking for a contemporary romance will love it.

About:
Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper Lacy. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. Review:
Go order this book right now!
I loved it so much, I plan on reading it again soon!

It’s a retelling of Beauty and the Beast…. To an extent.
We have a cursed Prince who lives in a castle away from everyone else, but he doesn’t have any magical clocks and candlesticks helping him out. All he has left is one Commander from his Royal Guard. His castle does clean itself, provides food and has some other magical occurrences going on though. Our Prince is also not a beast for most of the book. How his curse works is at the end of each summer/fall season he becomes a new beast who tears apart loved ones and local villagers. After a bit of terror or if he dies the season restarts back to summer/fall. Those who die at his hands do not return. The only way to end the curse is for him to find someone who will love him and who he can love in return. Over 300 seasons and over 300 girls later and still no luck. Enter Harper, the new kidnapped victim from D.C. brought to the parallel world of our Prince. She has cerebral palsy, but that doesn’t stop her from doing everything she can to run away. She’s not really like Belle from the Disney versions. Harper isn’t really book smart, and I don’t think a fancy library would have interested her enough to stay locked away in a castle. What Harper is though, is one tough and caring chick. Right from the start she tries to rescue a different girl from being kidnapped and ends up the victim instead. During the book she fights with anything she can get her hands on, makes daring escapes, and saves so many people.Did I mention it's written from both Harper's and the Prince's perspectives? Well it is! And that makes it even more amazing!

This book follows the Beauty and the Beast formula…. kind of ? I don’t want to give too much away. I will say that there’s that twist at the end of the book that leaves me begging for the next book right now! The author mentions on Goodreads that there’s a second book planed (Thank God).

The writing of this book is wonderful and kept me hooked.  Even though it’s a longer book (it tops out at almost 500 pages), and there are a few questions that I feel weren’t explained, it is such a quick read it will have you begging for more. The characters are wonderful and I loved them all.

I’d recommend this to any teen who loves Beauty and the Beast or who just wants a great Fantasy read! I’m just disappointed I read this book early and I don’t think much in 2019 will be able to compete with this book lol.

Don't mind me until I get book number two....

About:
How do you kill a god?

As her father's chosen heir, eighteen-year-old Rasmira has trained her whole life to become a warrior and lead her village. But when her coming-of-age trial is sabotaged and she fails the test, her father banishes her to the monster-filled wilderness with an impossible quest: to win back her honour, she must kill the oppressive god who claims tribute from the villages each year or die trying. (Goodreads)

Rating: 5 Stars

Review:
I loved Levenseller’s kick butt female lead in her Daughter of the Pirate King series. This book is no different.

I felt for Rasmira and how her father expected her to be tough and boyish. I had a similar experience growing up, except I feel like I had it a bit better and I might have accepted it a bit better than she did. There’s some confliction in Rasmira’s character. She wants to be tough and be a great leader someday, but at the same time she resents her Father and Mother for treating her the way that they do. She also seems to enjoy the fighting, but at the same time wishes sometimes she could act like a girl.

The betrayal Rasmira experiences is heart breaking. It’s not only her family but the boy she thinks she loves who hurt her. I loved how that set the stage for the rest of the book. It’s not just a straight romance. Rasmira has to learn to trust again after so much has been taken away from her.

I also loved how clever Levenseller was with creating the God. I really don’t want to give anything away to potential readers so that’s all I’m going to say there. Read the book and you’ll completely see what I mean.

Overall, this was a great quick adventure read. I’d probably give it to older readers who enjoyed the author’s first books or who are looking for a smart kick butt heroin.
