ABOUT:
A big-hearted romantic comedy in which the First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales after an incident of international proportions forces them to pretend to be best friends...

First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsides—namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations.

The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his mother’s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henry’s Prince Charming veneer, there’s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him.

As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you? (GoodReads)

REVIEW:
I liked the idea of this book more than I liked the actual story. When I first received the book and read the back I was so excited. It sounded so cute and fun. Once I got reading though it was more just like “Eh, I get it already. How many pages are left?”.

I never really liked the character of Alex. For the most part he seemed kind of irresponsible and whiny. Prince Henry was better, but not anything special. I found it interesting that the U.S. President is a woman, but at this point in time I didn’t find it super realistic since we haven’t had one yet. I feel like her role was oddly represented and adding in a son coming out as gay and in a relationship while she’s trying to get reelected was a bit much. The reaction of the Queen to Alex and Henry’s relationship I found to be a bit more realistic, but at the same time I feel like that’s probably not how the royal family would react in real life. I feel like the Queen has been around long enough now that she’d accept a Grandson who likes men, especially if he weren’t first in line for the throne.

Overall, what I thought was going to be a really cute LGBT story was just long and boring. The characters snuck around and slept with each other for the first ¾ of the book. Then they get caught and a bit of drama happens but then all clears up quickly.

It’s an ok read if you’re into political teen/new adult romance. Definitely would not recommend it to the younger teens due to sexual acts, sex, drinking, and drugs.

Read It Before You See The Movie!

Five Feet Apart
by Rachael Lippincott
Hardcover, 288 pages
Published November 20th 2018 by Simon Schuster Books for Young Readers
ISBN: 9781534437333
Library

ABOUT:
Can you love someone you can never touch?

Stella Grant likes to be in control—even though her totally out of control lungs have sent her in and out of the hospital most of her life. At this point, what Stella needs to control most is keeping herself away from anyone or anything that might pass along an infection and jeopardize the possibility of a lung transplant. Six feet apart. No exceptions.

The only thing Will Newman wants to be in control of is getting out of this hospital. He couldn’t care less about his treatments, or a fancy new clinical drug trial. Soon, he’ll turn eighteen and then he’ll be able to unplug all these machines and actually go see the world, not just its hospitals.

Will’s exactly what Stella needs to stay away from. If he so much as breathes on Stella she could lose her spot on the transplant list. Either one of them could die. The only way to stay alive is to stay apart. But suddenly six feet doesn’t feel like safety. It feels like punishment.

What if they could steal back just a little bit of the space their broken lungs have stolen from them? Would five feet apart really be so dangerous if it stops their hearts from breaking too? (Goodreads)

RATING: 4 Stars

REVIEW:
This book is marketed as being just like “A Fault In Our Stars”. If you’re only looking at a romance between two sick kids then yes, it’s exactly like that. In reality though it has a lot of differences.

The two main characters of this story share the same disease, Cystic Fibrosis.  They aren’t supposed to get within six feet of each other, so of course that means they can never ever touch. But when you’re a teenager and a cute boy is staying right next door, of course crushes occur. And crushes can lead to romance. To take back a little bit of what their diseases have stolen from them, the main characters decided to live by the new five feet apart rule.

Possible spoiler….
Of course at one point they end up touching in order to save one of their lives. They both live to see the end of the book but you know they both aren’t going to live long (especially one of them). They also aren’t together at the end of the book. How can you really have a romance if you can’t touch or get to close? Our two teens do learn a lot from each other and in the end come away with new views on life because of it.

I enjoyed this book mostly because I learned things about a disease that I wasn’t really familiar with. It made me see things through someone else’s eyes and made me look at my life a bit differently. It wasn’t the best written books, I think mostly because it’s taken from a screen play to a movie, but it did keep me interested up until the end. Because I have seen the trailer for the movie I kept picturing Cole Sprouse as Will. I feel like that might have made things a bit more entertaining for me as well.

For the most part I think any teen could read this book and enjoy it. There is mention of two side characters having sex but it is such a tiny piece in an otherwise pretty clean book.

About:
How do you kill a god?

As her father's chosen heir, eighteen-year-old Rasmira has trained her whole life to become a warrior and lead her village. But when her coming-of-age trial is sabotaged and she fails the test, her father banishes her to the monster-filled wilderness with an impossible quest: to win back her honour, she must kill the oppressive god who claims tribute from the villages each year or die trying. (Goodreads)

Rating: 5 Stars

Review:
I loved Levenseller’s kick butt female lead in her Daughter of the Pirate King series. This book is no different.

I felt for Rasmira and how her father expected her to be tough and boyish. I had a similar experience growing up, except I feel like I had it a bit better and I might have accepted it a bit better than she did. There’s some confliction in Rasmira’s character. She wants to be tough and be a great leader someday, but at the same time she resents her Father and Mother for treating her the way that they do. She also seems to enjoy the fighting, but at the same time wishes sometimes she could act like a girl.

The betrayal Rasmira experiences is heart breaking. It’s not only her family but the boy she thinks she loves who hurt her. I loved how that set the stage for the rest of the book. It’s not just a straight romance. Rasmira has to learn to trust again after so much has been taken away from her.

I also loved how clever Levenseller was with creating the God. I really don’t want to give anything away to potential readers so that’s all I’m going to say there. Read the book and you’ll completely see what I mean.

Overall, this was a great quick adventure read. I’d probably give it to older readers who enjoyed the author’s first books or who are looking for a smart kick butt heroin.

But then Hunter goes head-to-head with Chris, and Becca wonders who’s hiding the most dangerous truth of all. (GoodReads)

RATING: 5 Stars
REVIEW:
Right from the start this book grabbed my attention. Our female lead comes in and rescues the misunderstood “bad” boy from a duo of thugs. Love it when the girl does the rescuing! The action, romance and powers just continue from there.

Though the book is older and the cover is not that great judging by 2018 standards the story it’s self was still entertaining. Yes it’s your typical bad boy/good girl romance story with all the proper YA elements thrown in, but Kemmerer gives you a bit more by adding in elemental powers and bad guy “hunters”.  The 4 Merrick brothers become people you wish you knew, and that’s not just because they have cool powers. It definitely leaves you wanting to know more about all of them and their backgrounds. There’s a sense of mystery to the story while you try to figure out who the guides (hunters) are and why others like them hate the Merricks.  Overall this book is a great start to the series and I recommend it to Teens looking for an older little known series.

ABOUT:
Gabriel Merrick plays with fire. Literally. Sometimes he can even control it. And sometimes he can't. Gabriel has always had his brothers to rely on, especially his twin, Nick. But when an arsonist starts wreaking havoc on their town, all the signs point to Gabriel. Only he's not doing it. And no one seems to believe him. Except a shy sophomore named Layne, a brainiac who dresses in turtlenecks and jeans and keeps him totally off balance. Because Layne has a few secrets of her own... (GoodReads)

RATING: 5 Stars

REVIEW:
Book number 2…. Just as good as the first. It continues the story right after the first one ends, only now the main character is hot head Gabriel instead of Chris. All of the characters from the first book are still in book two, so don’t worry about wondering what happened to…. Insert name of favorite brother here.

This book focuses on Gabriel finding himself and proving that he’s more than just a bully. Sure we yet again have a romance going, but there’s action and mystery and bad guys galore too! The big question throughout is who is starting all of the fires? Are they a message from the Guides, or is Gabriel really responsible? Will this be the end of our favorite brothers? Probably not, since there are a few more books after this one, but one could still get hurt or even killed!

After reading this book I think I’m team Gabriel! The other boys are amazing to but his story just seems to hit me more. If you liked the first book in the series definitely read this one too! You won’t be disappointed.

ABOUT:
With power comes enemies. Lots of them.

Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He’s learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can’t seem to afford any allies.

He’s up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait.

Then there’s Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She’s not hostile. She’s bold. Funny. Hot. But she’s got an agenda, too.

With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down. But finding out what means he’ll have to find someone he can trust… (GoodReads)

RATING: 4 Stars

REVIEW:
Book three….. I feel like this is where the series started to lose a bit of steam. This book again picks up right where book two left off, only instead of being from one of the brothers’ points of view, we get Hunter’s. Don’t get me wrong. I love Hunter. He might as well be one of the brothers….almost. His whole bouncing back and forth to being on their side, to being on the guides side, to being on his own side, gets to be a bit much though. His motive is sketchy most of the time, though I do also feel bad for him. He’s one of those characters who needs to pick a side but spends too much time deciding on what’s best.

I do still love Kemmerer’s writing style though. And throughout this book, I did start to like Hunter more and more. I enjoyed learning about his background and powers and seeing how he grows as a character and ally. The Merricks and all the other characters you loved from the last books are still in this one too, so fear not my friend.

Overall, not my favorite of the three so far, but definitely still worth a read!

ABOUT:
Nick Merrick is stretched to breaking point. He's trying to keep his grades sky-high or he won't get in to college. He's trying to keep his brother's business afloat or the Merricks will be out on the street. He's trying to keep the secret of where he's going in the evenings from his twin brother Gabriel - or he fears he'll lose his family. And he's trying to keep his mind off the hot, self-assured dancer who is his 'girlfriend's' partner.

And then Quinn takes to hanging around his sworn enemy, and an Elemental Guide is counting the hours until he can try again to kill the Merrick brothers. Storms are brewing. On all sides. (GoodReads)

RATING: 4 Stars

REVIEW:
Book four goes back to being from a Merrick point of view, this time Nick’s. It yet again picks up right after the last book. In this book we learn that Nick has a secret. It just so happens that he’s gay and has a boyfriend. He doesn’t know how his family will react to this news so he hides it from them. While dealing with the threat of the Guides (these guys just don’t quit) Nick’s secret is discovered. It’s interesting how all the different family members and friends react to the news. It’s not necessary what you’d expect. There is all other sorts of family drama in this one as well. School, grades, scholarships, keeping the business going, and more.

This book definitely switches things up. It’s not a bad boy/good girl romance anymore, but a kind of sweet LGBT story. There’s still your elemental power family vs. the bad guy story mixed in, but I feel like the emotional family story takes front stage in this one.

I liked this one better than the last book, but I still feel like it was missing something that the first two had. Does the story feel a bit rushed? Or unfinished? I’m not really sure. There’s just something not as grabbing. Still, this is a great read, and if you enjoyed the first three books you know you’re invested and have to read this one too!

ABOUT:
One misstep and they lose it all. For the last time.

Michael Merrick understands pressure. He's the only parent his three brothers have had for years. His power to control Earth could kill someone if he miscalculates. Now an Elemental Guide has it in for his family, and he's all that stands in the way.

His girlfriend, Hannah, understands pressure too. She's got a child of her own, and a job as a firefighter that could put her life in danger at any moment.

But there are people who have had enough of Michael's defiance, his family's 'bad luck'. Before he knows it, Michael's enemies have turned into the Merricks' enemies, and they're armed for war.

They're not interested in surrender. But Michael isn't the white flag type anyway. Everything is set for the final showdown.

Four elements, one family. Will they hold together, or be torn apart?

RATING: 4 Stars

REVIEW:
Ah, the last book in the series. One brother’s story left to tell.
As before, this takes place right after the last book, and if you didn’t guess already, it’s from Michael’s point of view. Up until this book, I don’t think our favorite oldest brother was represented well. He was more of a Dad character than a brother for a good part of the time. In this book he finally gets to shine a bit and explain his side of things. You find out more about his background and how he’s been keeping his family together the best that he can.

Of course it’s not an Elemental book without a showdown against the Guides… and this time not all will make it out alive.

This is still a decent read… though the end is not what I wanted. As the last book I wanted to have a happily ever after all tied up in a neat little bow. After all the family has been through is that too much to ask? But no….. we can’t have nice things like that. That’s all I’m going to say so that I don’t spoil anything!

Overall, I feel like this book was rushed and not complete. I want to know more about the Merricks. I wanted Michel to finally have something really good happen. The guy needs a break for crying out loud! This book is still a must read for anyone who has gotten this far into the series. Just be warned you may be disappointed and want to throw your book against a wall.

P.S.
I feel like the guy in the photo on this cover has been used on other books...... Crap.... Search on Goodreads shows that there are way to many covers with the same picture used!!!!

ELEMENTAL SERIES AS A WHOLE?
Rating:  Starts strong but piddles out a bit at the end. Still I really want more about the Merrick boys! 5 Stars for leaving me wanting more!

Review:
I love Brigid Kemmerer and her writing. I’ve probably stated that in a few other reviews already, but it’s true. When it comes to misunderstood bad boys that you just want to hug, she’s a genius. This series has six or more of those characters. All of them I loved for different reasons. The females in this series are great too. The author does a great job with strong girls who can protect themselves even though they’re usually the “good” girls. I’m not really big on romance novels, but this series worked for me and I ate it right up. The brothers and their personalities mixed with the elemental powers put this above most other YA romance books for me. If you can get past the old school covers and a few of the outdated things in the story (there’s very few of them) I’d say pick up this series and give it a try!

About:
A cannon. A strap.
A piece. A biscuit.
A burner. A heater.
A chopper. A gat.
A hammer
A tool
for RULE

Or, you can call it a gun. That’s what fifteen-year-old Will has shoved in the back waistband of his jeans. See, his brother Shawn was just murdered. And Will knows the rules. No crying. No snitching. Revenge. That’s where Will’s now heading, with that gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, the gun that was his brother’s gun. He gets on the elevator, seventh floor, stoked. He knows who he’s after. Or does he?

As the elevator stops on the sixth floor, on comes Buck. Buck, Will finds out, is who gave Shawn the gun before Will took the gun. Buck tells Will to check that the gun is even loaded. And that’s when Will sees that one bullet is missing. And the only one who could have fired Shawn’s gun was Shawn. Huh. Will didn’t know that Shawn had ever actually used his gun. Bigger huh. BUCK IS DEAD. But Buck’s in the elevator?

Just as Will’s trying to think this through, the door to the next floor opens. A teenage girl gets on, waves away the smoke from Dead Buck’s cigarette. Will doesn’t know her, but she knew him. Knew. When they were eight. And stray bullets had cut through the playground, and Will had tried to cover her, but she was hit anyway, and so what she wants to know, on that fifth floor elevator stop, is, what if Will, Will with the gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, MISSES.

And so it goes, the whole long way down, as the elevator stops on each floor, and at each stop someone connected to his brother gets on to give Will a piece to a bigger story than the one he thinks he knows. A story that might never know an END…if WILL gets off that elevator.  (Goodreads)

Review:

This is a powerful read. I feel like it had even more of an impact because I listened to it and heard it from a voice not my own. It made it feel more real. Like someone was standing there telling me the story of their life. I’m not sure if I had read it instead if it would have been the same way.  I don’t usually pick up novels in verse, that’s why I waited so long to read this one. For some reason the format doesn’t really appeal to me. Listening to it being read though was a whole new experience. If I hadn’t known already I don’t think that I would have picked up on it being a novel in verse. The story is just that well crafted. It’s sad and will probably anger you. I couldn’t believe the “rules” that the people in this situation are suppose to follow blindly. There’s so much that can go wrong in their vicious cycle. One person dies, then a loved one is suppose to go get revenge by killing the killer, but by that loved one killing someone another loved one steps up to take revenge on the original revenge killing. Where does it stop?!? I know that in the real world that this is really how some people live. I know that kids can’t play outside in some areas for fear of being shot. I remember going to school with my mom, who was a teacher in one of these areas, and having her tell me to stay away from the windows because shootings happened outside the school on almost a daily basis. It’s a scary way to live. It’s also scary to think that this is how people live and no one stops it. This book is beautifully worded and might change your look on things. And the ending…. DAM! I want to know what our main character chooses. I want to believe he ends the stream of violence but at the same time I know that’s not how his world works and getting out of the cycle is probably almost impossible. I whole heartily recommend listening to this book, or reading it if you don’t mind novels in verse.

Neanderthal Opens the Door to the Universe
by Preston Norton
Hardcover, 400 pages
Published May 22nd 2018 by Disney-Hyperion
ISBN: 9781484790625
ARC

About:
Cliff Hubbard is a huge loser. Literally. His nickname at Happy Valley High School is Neanderthal because he's so enormous-6'6" and 250 pounds to be exact. He has no one at school and life in his trailer park home has gone from bad to worse ever since his older brother's suicide.

There's no one Cliff hates more than the nauseatingly cool quarterback, Aaron Zimmerman. Then Aaron returns to school after a near-death experience with a bizarre claim: while he was unconscious he saw God, who gave him a list of things to do to make Happy Valley High suck less. And God said there's only one person who can help: Neanderthal.

To his own surprise, Cliff says he's in. As he and Aaron make their way through the List, which involves a vindictive English teacher, a mysterious computer hacker, a decidedly unchristian cult of Jesus Teens, the local drug dealers, and the meanest bully at HVHS--Cliff feels like he's part of something for the first time since losing his brother. But fixing a broken school isn't as simple as it seems, and just when Cliff thinks they've completed the List, he realizes their mission hits closer to home than he ever imagined. (Goodreads)

Rating: 5 Stars

Review:

I first heard about this book during a Booklist webinar. It interested me so much that I hunted down a ARC copy of it. I definitely was not disappointed.  I loved that even though our main character Cliff’s life is pretty crappy, he still has hope.  He comes close to giving up, but fights through it. His inner dialogue is a perfect mix of sarcasm, geek, and is hysterical. I was rooting for him the whole book. I’m not sure on my own religious stance, but their list of things to do that may or may not have come from God is a perfect plot device. It kept me interested and guessing if and how they might fulfill everything on the list. I loved how characters that I wasn’t a fan of in the beginning were able to evolve and change into better people. I think that teens who read this book will be able to relate to something in it, whether they’re one of the “cool” kids or an “outsider” or one of the many other groups in between. They do touch on “mature” themes such as drinking, drugs, and sex that younger teens might not be ready for yet. This book also discusses the tough subject matter of bullying, suicide and abuse so if those are a trigger for you, you may want to skip this one.

Rating: 3 Stars

Review:
I’ll admit that I enjoyed this read. I’ll even probably pick up the next book in the series out of curiosity, however, this book is kind of a knock off of Harry Potter. I’m not just saying that because you’ve got kids in magic school. You have 3 kids (2 boys and a girl, sound familiar?), from different backgrounds, befriend each other and become best friends. They “adopt” a magical pet (kind of like the owls, Hermine’s cat, Ron’s rat). There’s a great evil that is similar to Voldermort in Harry Potter. Each book is a different year in school, just like Harry Potter.

The writing in this book wasn’t amazing. There were a lot of conflicting pieces in the story. At one point Call says he only wears pants so no one will see his scars. The next thing you know he’s dunking his legs in the hot tub like pool in the common room. Was he wearing his pants and getting them soaked while doing that? And throughout Call wants to run away but finding a door to escape is almost impossible. Yet once they get their pet, the kids take it out for secret walks all the time. SO confusing! Young teens and fans of Harry Potter looking for a read alike will probably enjoy this series. Others might be better off finding a different fantasy series.

Review:
I loved this book so much! Such a perfectly done diverse Gay romance! Full of love and heart ache and cuteness! A perfect mix of Adam’s and Becky’s writing (yes I have read both of their work before, and this is now my favorite!). You can definitely tell who wrote what, especially that ending!!!!  I laughed at so many parts I’m sure the people sitting near me thought I was crazy.  I don’t know what else to say without spoiling anything. My work friend was the one who got me into hunting an ARC of this book down and we both love it so much! We’ve passed it on to a few of our library friends and all of them loved it too.  The cover is not necessarily my favorite, but really it’s what’s on the inside that counts. There are sexual situations in this book that younger teens might not be ready for, but for those ready…. Get this book as soon as it comes out and read it!!!
